We’ve all been enjoying the sunshine over the last few weeks, but we’ve noticed a lot of pink and peeling noses and shoulders coming in to the salon! We’re very good at packing the sun tan lotion and after sun products when we go on holiday, but often forget to look after our skin when we’re at home. With balmy temperatures reaching over 30°C in recent weeks we really need to remember to look after our skin both home and away.

1) Lips
Not only are dry, cracked lips unsightly, but sun exposure to lips can cause serious long-term damage. The outer layer of the lips is very thin with little melanin, which is the pigment that protects your skin from harmful UV radiation. If your lips become burnt this can also alter the collagen, which is what keeps your lips plump and prevents wrinkles. Remember to use a good lip balm when out in the sun and keep your lips well hydrated.

2) Face
Protecting your facial skin from the sun and keeping it hydrated is really important to prevent the depletion of your skin’s supply of natural lubricating oils leading to dry, flaky and prematurely wrinkled skin. Long-term exposure to UV can also cause Actinic Keratosis, small scaly patches of skin or tiny bumps, which can be a warning sign of an increased risk of skin cancer. 3) Eyes
Again the skin around the eyes is very thin and delicate and needs protection to help prevent the early onset of wrinkles and more serious skin conditions. However we often forget about our eyeballs! Yes believe it or not your eyeballs are also at risk from sunburn, resulting in symptoms which are unpleasant but thankfully often temporary such as red, gritty feeling eyes, extreme sensitivity to light and excessive tearing. However extended sun exposure can cause more serious issues such as macular degeneration and cataracts. Make sure you wear sun glasses with UV protection lenses.

4) Body
As we previously mentioned we’ve seen a lot of red shoulders (knees and toes, knees and toes!) in recent weeks. We all like to wear sleeveless tops in the hot weather, but often don’t think to put on sun screen when going about our day to day business or pottering in the garden. As we all know exposure to the sun’s UV rays not only accelerates the effects of skin ageing but also increases your risk of developing skin cancer. As a minimum we recommend using an SPF of 15 on your body, and much higher if you have fair skin. 5) Hands
